Identifying Common Household Pests
As we edge into summertime, homeowners are going to start seeing more of their dreaded archenemies…common household pests. Don’t let these little critters bug you too much, though. We’re here to help you identify some of the most common household pests here in Florida, from how to ID them to their behaviors and more. Let’s learn how to keep these pests at bay!
Ants are Common Household Pests
These itty-bitty guys are one of the most common household pests in any state. Ants are small, with sectioned bodies and antennae that they use to feel out their environment. Many ants are harmless but some can cause irritation if they get a bite of you, and some can even burrow into your home to make nests in damp wood (carpenter ants).
Ants come into your home looking for food or water, so keeping your home clean (especially your kitchen) is a great way to deter them.
Iguanas
This may seem funny, but iguanas really do cause a problem for Florida homeowners! These large lizards can jump, they can get into your home through spaces like vents and pipes and often sneak in to search for food or water.
Iguanas do pose a health risk to humans, as coming in contact with them or their droppings can give you salmonella. Make sure to protect your home by ensuring that all small openings are covered and try not to leave your doors or windows open without a screen.
Mosquitoes
Ah, yes, the bane of humanity! Mosquitoes are a problem anywhere that you go, especially in warmer climates like Florida. These little flying creatures have spindly legs, a long, sharp nose/moth, and tiny bodies that swell up when they eat.
Mosquitoes will find any way into your home that they can, as you are their food source. They can also transmit a variety of diseases through their bites, along with causing those itchy bumps. Keep your home secure by making sure you have screens in place for doors and windows.
Cockroaches
These common household pests come in a few sizes and shapes, all of them icky and crunchy. Some cockroach species have wings, but most tend to run for cover with their long legs rather than fly. Roaches tend to come into homes looking for food and shelter and love to make themselves comfortable in damp, dark spaces.
The risks that come with roaches in your home can include asthma attacks, salmonella, and E. coli. Keep your home clean and free of clutter to minimize their interest in your space.
Rodents
Furry little rodents may look cute, but boy, can they tear up your home! Rats, mice, raccoons, and squirrels can all worm their way into the dark spaces of your home to look for snacks and shelter, maybe even to nest.
Many rodents carry diseases that can affect people via bites or scratches, as well as doing major damage to your home’s wiring and insulation. Keep the clutter to a minimum in your storage spaces and your home clean.
Spiders
Last but not least, spiders are very common household pests and unwelcome houseguest in Florida. With a wide variety, both venomous and harmless, that like to enter your home in search of shelter and prey. Ranging from large to small, furry to shiny, these eight-legged critters build webs and snag food where they can.
While spiders can’t always hurt you, like black widows or brown recluses, they are a nuisance. Keeping your home free of other pests is a good way to keep spiders at bay, as is keeping clutter out as much as possible.
